Chris Walker & Greg Scherman take over Premier Club in San Diego

from Greg Scherman

It is our pleasure to inform you that as of the 1st of January 2005, Greg Scherman and Chris Walker have teamed up and acquired the assets of Premier Athletic & Squash Club to carry the torch of San Diego Squash into the future. After 12 years of devoted commitment to squash in San Diego, Marty Dicker is hanging up his racquet and pursuing new career challenges.

The tentative name for the new club will be the ‘San Diego Squash’.

Greg and Chris have coordinated with the current landlord to split the existing club space and begin converting and renovating the new space to bring squash into the 21st century for the San Diego Squash players and the Southern California squash community at large. The ultimate goal is to provide a gathering place for members on and off the court, an atmosphere of camaraderie as members improve their squash with the help of our professional coach while creating opportunities for amateur and professional squash players to come to San Diego to enrich our experiences. We have a bold vision to put San Diego Squash on the national and international map of renowned squash destinations.

There are numerous tenant improvements that will take place during the first 60 days of 2005 to greatly enhance the squash experience for our membership, including (but not limited to) the following:

  • new locker rooms
  • bar with a large flat panel TV for viewing/broadcasting squash matches and sporting events
  • wireless internet access
  • audio/visual installation on the ‘video analysis court’
  • Full pro shop

Coupled with this will be a new state of the art Squash Program being led by our newly signed full-time Squash Professional, Jeff Young and the USA Men’s National Team Coach, Chris Walker.

Jeff Young, a former Australian No. 2, will be moving to San Diego after the new year. He brings with him a multitude of experience as a Squash Club owner and coach in Brisbane, Australia. Currently based in Antwerp, he is coaching and a member of the Professional Squash Association, playing on the World Circuit. Jeff is looking forward to developing an outstanding squash program for adults and juniors, complemented with a fun social environment.

Chris Walker, former World No.4, 3x world champion and British No.1, moved to the States two years ago in the name of Squash. Currently the U.S. Men’s National team coach, he is playing Squash tournaments across the country and coaching some of the nation’s best juniors. Chris is excited to be actively involved in the ongoing development of the club working closely with Jeff in developing the San Diego Squash program, and being committed to bringing major exhibitions, clinics, tournaments, and media events to the club. We are going to host the Men’s US Team Playoffs for the 2005 Pan Am Cup this coming May 13-15!

We hope to see you in San Diego later in the year! Please contact Greg Scherman with any questions at 858-597-9444. We look forward to hearing from you!
