2004 March Madness IX by Robert Graham - Squash Professional Santa Barbara Athletic Club
Last months (in?)famous March Madness IX Squash
Tournament in Santa Barbara had a slightly different format to usual
events, with just two divisions of 32 players each, seeded carefully
with mixed genders and skill levels in each one. This unique format guaranteed that everyone played
five matches whether they won or lost and finished up with a placing in
their division from 1st to 32nd by the end of play on Sunday. There was
a fun sociable atmosphere around all weekend - it made such a difference
that everyone was there until the end. Division 1 had players rated from about 5.5 down to
3.8, and saw the majority of matches go with the seedings towards the
latter rounds, although there were some surprises along the way. Division 2s players were rated from about 3.8 down
to beginner level, some players playing a tournament for the first time.
This division had a few more upsets, but just as many close matches. The top 8 finishers in Division 2 were:
1st - Tina Fuselli (Phoenix), 2nd Alex De La Garza (Panama), 3rd
Paul Vesilind (Burbank SC), 4th AJ Mersola (Burbank SC), 5th
Michelle Kobashi (Santa Barbara), 6th Ferdy Geitner (Santa Barbara),
7th Greg Jizmagian (San Francisco), and 8th David Farber (Santa
Barbara). Honorable mentions go to Shannon Wallace of San
Diego and Suzie McSherry of Santa Barbara, whose 9th and 17th place
finishes meant that they only lost one match. The top 8 finishers in Division 1 were: 1st Dylan
Neal (LA), 2nd Armando Olguin (San Francisco), 3rd Sam Hansen (LA),
4th Henry De Wan (San Francisco), 5th Ashley Smith (Las Vegas), 6th
Dar Khalighi (Seattle), 7th Nathan Scott (LA), and 8th David
Hirsch (LA). Again, honorable mentions go to Debbie Brown of Santa
Barbara and Darin Randles of Phoenix for their 9th and 17th place
finishes. Congratulations to the winners and also to all the
players who made it though their five matches and were able to walk out
of the club! |
